A diesel supply hose can appear undamaged from the outside while becoming restrictive internally.
This is particularly important on suction-side circuits feeding a high-pressure pump.
Suction Can Expose Internal Hose Damage
At low fuel demand:
hose remains open → fuel supply appears normal
At high demand:
pump suction increases → weakened inner liner deforms → effective flow area decreases
When load is removed, the hose may return toward its original shape.
Why Workshop Idle Testing Misses It
Idle requires comparatively little fuel.
The hose may therefore pass enough fuel for:
- starting;
- idle;
- light acceleration.
The symptom may appear only during sustained high-load operation.
Useful Diagnostic Evidence
Compare:
- pump inlet pressure;
- inlet vacuum;
- fuel flow;
- commanded rail pressure;
- actual rail pressure;
- symptom under load.
If inlet restriction rises as rail pressure begins to fall, the supply side deserves attention.
Cavitation Should Not Be Ignored
Insufficient inlet supply can create unfavorable conditions at the high-pressure pump.
Diagnosis should therefore verify the fuel path before replacing the pump.
